7 Days / 6 Nights · The "Whiskey" Route
The Machame Route — nicknamed the "Whiskey Route" to contrast with the easier "Coca Cola" Marangu route — is the most popular camping route on Kilimanjaro and widely considered one of the most scenic. It approaches from the southwest and traverses through five distinct ecological zones: rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, glacier zone, and arctic summit.
The "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization profile built into the Machame Route gives it a notably higher summit success rate than Marangu. The 7-day itinerary adds an extra night at Barranco Camp for additional acclimatization — our recommended option.
Drive to Machame Gate for registration. Trek through dense montane rainforest rich with wildlife. Arrive at Machame Camp set in the forest at 3,000m.
Distance: 11km · Time: 5–7 hours
The forest gives way to open moorland with spectacular views. A steady climb leads to the Shira Plateau — one of the highest plateaux in Africa — and Shira Camp.
Distance: 5km · Time: 4–6 hours
Acclimatization day — climb to Lava Tower (4,640m) for "climb high, sleep low" before descending to Barranco Camp. The dramatic Barranco Wall comes into view.
Distance: 10km · Time: 6–8 hours
Extra acclimatization day (7-day itinerary). Optional scramble up the dramatic Barranco Wall — a class 2 climb requiring hands and feet but with no technical ropes. Breathtaking views reward the effort. Return to sleep at Barranco.
Distance: 5km · Time: 3–4 hours
Ascend the Barranco Wall then traverse across the southern face of the mountain to Karanga Camp. Continue to high camp at Barafu (4,640m). Rest early for midnight summit attempt.
Distance: 9km · Time: 5–7 hours
Depart at midnight. Climb through Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. Descend to Mweka Camp for celebration dinner.
Distance: 21km · Time: 12–16 hours
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Certificate collection at gate. Drive to Arusha.
Distance: 10km · Time: 3–4 hours
Its scenic variety, excellent acclimatization profile, and high success rate make Machame the preferred choice for experienced trekkers.
With the 7-day itinerary the Machame Route has a success rate of approximately 80–85%.
The wall looks intimidating but is a scramble (hands and feet), not technical climbing. Most people of reasonable fitness complete it with encouragement from guides.
