6 Days / 5 Nights · The "Coca Cola" Route
The Marangu Route is the most popular and accessible route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, often referred to as the "Coca Cola" or "tourist" route. Unlike all other routes, Marangu is the only one with sleeping huts at each camp — providing beds, solar lights, and communal dining huts for added comfort.
The extended 6-day itinerary (instead of the standard 5 days) allows for crucial acclimatization at Horombo Hut, significantly improving your summit success rate. The route approaches from the southeast side of the mountain through beautiful rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert before the final summit push.
After breakfast at your hotel, drive to Marangu Gate (1,860m) for registration. Begin your hike through lush montane rainforest rich with birdlife, colobus monkeys, and exotic plants. Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m) after approximately 4–5 hours.
Distance: 9km · Time: 4–5 hours · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The forest gives way to moorland as you climb steadily. The trail opens up with beautiful views of the summit and surrounding plains. Optional side trip to Mawenzi Tarn. Arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m).
Distance: 12km · Time: 5–7 hours · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
A rest day at Horombo is included in the 6-day itinerary to aid acclimatization. Explore the surrounding moorland with a short hike to Zebra Rocks, returning to sleep at the same altitude. The golden rule: "Climb high, sleep low."
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The terrain transitions to alpine desert as vegetation thins out above 4,000m. Pass through the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks to reach Kibo Hut (4,700m). Rest early — midnight summit attempt ahead.
Distance: 16km · Time: 6–8 hours · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Start at midnight for the summit push in the cold and dark. Climb the steep volcanic scree to Gillman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. Descend back through Kibo and Mandara to Horombo.
Distance: 23km · Time: 12–15 hours · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Final descent through the moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Collect your certificate at the gate. Drive back to Arusha.
Distance: 21km · Time: 5–6 hours · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

With the 6-day itinerary and proper acclimatization the success rate is significantly higher than the 5-day version. Overall Marangu success rate is around 65–70%.
You should be in good cardiovascular health and able to walk 5–7 hours per day. No technical climbing experience is needed.
Warm layers (temperatures drop to -20°C at summit), waterproof jacket, hiking boots, trekking poles, and a good sleeping bag. We can advise on a full gear list.
